In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the common rules and regulations when it comes to use of a mouthguard during mixed martial arts (MMA) participation. Mouthguard use is a requirement across every reputable MMA organization of any kind, and not just for rules-related reasons - because they are vital for protecting these athletes.

At Damage Control Mouthguards, we're happy to offer a huge range of mouthguard options for any activity you're involved in, including MMA mouthguards, muay thai mouthguards and more. While part one of our series focused on the regulations surrounding mouthguards in MMA, today's part two will shift gears and go over the practical reasons why they're a vital part of the sport.

Preventing Dental Injury or Device Fall-Out

Firstly, and most obviously, mouthguards are designed to help protect the user's teeth. When strikes land that cause participants to bite down, a mouthguard can prevent broken teeth or other dental injury. It also helps keep any dental prosthetics (bridges, crowns etc.) in place.

This happens through the shock absorption that mouthguards provide - they help absorb some of the force generated when a hit is taken, protecting both teeth and any dental devices.

Avoiding Jaw Dislocation Issues

Another common risk of participating in MMA is the chance of jaw dislocation, caused by strikes or submissions. A well-fitted mouthguard can help prevent this from happening - a good fit will reduce the risk of jaw injury due to accidental strikes or submissions.

This is one area that highlights the importance of fit for MMA mouthguards. While mouthguards for certain other activities might have a bit more flexibility in terms of how closely they need to fit, when it comes to MMA, you need a mouthguard that fits snugly and securely, with no gaps between the guard and the teeth or gums.

Protecting Soft Tissues

In addition to protecting the teeth and jaw, a mouthguard also helps protect any soft tissues that may be exposed in the mouth. These can include lips, cheeks, tongue and gums.

In MMA especially, it's important to keep all of these covered, as they can easily become injured during an active match. A well-fitted mouthguard will help keep all of these areas safe and protected.
